Tyne Tees Tigers defeated Sheffield Thunder (forfeit); defeated by Nottingham Scorpions and Manchester Mosquitos
Tigers played host to AFLCNE Lightning Round on Saturday. Tigers were rewarded a win before the day to forfeit by Sheffield Thunder not being able to get a team up. The day started with a bit of mist of the freshly cut GSA playing fields. For our first league match of the season we welcomed experienced AFLCNE units in Nottingham Scorpions and Manchester Moquitos.
GAME 1 - TIGERS v Scorpions
The Scorpions arrived slightly late to the ground and the bounced started with the Tigers having a full squad of 16 to Notts 11. The tigers came out of the blocks with good aggression and intent, but Notts just edged a tight first half.
HT 2.4 (16) to 3.7 (25)
In the 2nd half the Tigers looked to use more of their extra subs, particularly to cover injuries to defenders Travis and Boxie. In a cruel blow Boxie went out of the game, copping a 2nd bad injury for the season. The coaches hoped the extra subs would impact on Notts as the game went on , but they the well drilled Scorps stood firm with good clearances around the middle. Notts forwards held more marks and were too strong in the 2nd half for the home team. Good efforts from Roy, Ross, Morgs, Brady, Travis, Steve.
FT 3.6 (24) to 9.11 (65)
GAME 2 - TIGERS v Mozzies
After a competitive effort against Scorps the Tigers had an hour rest before taking to the pitch again. The Mozzies had finished their match agsinst Merseyside with a big score and presented a big challenge for the home side. The Tigers had lost two players from the early match but still had a good 13 players. The first half was tough in the contest but the Mozzies showed their class edging to handy lead at half time. The Tigers showed good first efforts but had no luck with marks not sticking and didn't get the run of umpiring decisions. The Mozzies were starting to the look menacing.
HT 1.2 (8) to 10.7 (67)
At half the Tigers coaches approached the umpires about some of the quesionable decisions. The coaches pulled the players in a half time and asked for the boys to dig deep for another 20mins and focus on the ball. The second half started with a series of good plays for the Tigers, but we lacked the goals at the end to trouble the Mozzies. The Mozzies had good young players and their experienced blokes chipped in too. Unfortunately Mozzies ran away with a big win...........as they have done to most other teams this year.
All the Tigers put in a good shift. Good effort from Roy, Brady, Morgs, Chris, Craig, Liam and Noles.
FT 2.2 (14) to 25.10 (160)
Although a dissapointing day on the pitch, the club did quite well off the field with good cash raised from the burgers and raffle. Special thanks to hard working Prez Phil and Mikey T.
Good news is we can have a match this coming Saturday away vs Sheffield. All improving signs for the club with new blokes in Ross, Morgs, Bish, Brady and Chris pushing the club forward and growing the game in the NE. We will fight on.
