Tyne Tees Tigers Won 4, Lost Semi-Final to Wimbledon Hawks
Saturday 9th April saw the Tigers travel north to participate in the 2016 Haggis cup in Edinburgh. Joining forces with 5 players from our friends the Huddersfield Rams we were the only representatives from the AFLCNE.
The first set of pool matches saw us defeat the Edinburgh Bloods 26 points to 23 with goals from Luke Booth (2), Beau McGuinness and Anthony Roy Brannigan. Next up were the Leaside Lions. Tigers were victorious by 40 points to 24 with goals from Chris Medcraft (2) Beau McGuiness (2) and Karl Haigh (3).
Having topped our initial group we entered the 2nd group stage with Glasgow Sharks who finished 2nd in their group and Amsterdam Devils who finished bottom.
First up was the Sharks, an extremely tight game saw the scores level until the last couple of minutes when 2 late goals saw the tigers kick away to a 32 - 20 points win. Goals were scored by Luke Booth (2) Karl Haigh (2) and David 'Mini' Rolt
Final game in the second stage saw the Tigers play Amsterdam Devils. A see-saw battle which at one stage saw the Tigers down by 13 points with 4 minutes left to play saw the Tigers win by 29 points to 26 following 2 very late goals from Luke Booth. Goalscorers Luke Booth (2) Karl Haigh (2).
Following the 2nd group stage the Tigers were ranked in 3rd place on percentage with an unbeaten record and as such faced Wimbledon Hawks in the semi final.
In what proved to be a match too far for the Tigers Wimbledon's energy and ability to rotate significant numbers from the bench proved decisive and Tigers lost by 13 points to 49, goals from Karl Haigh and Lee Murdoch.
While disappointing to go out so close to the final Wimbledon were the best team in the tournament and we bowed out with our heads held high.
Tigers man of the tournament Morgan Cole and special thanks to the Rams boys, same time next year?
